What Are Clear Aligners?

Your Digital Journey

Using advanced 3D digital scanning technology, we capture a precise digital impression of your teeth and plan every movement in your treatment digitally before your first tray is made. This means we can show you a virtual simulation of your final result before you commit to treatment — giving you complete confidence in what your smile will look like at the end.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

From Digital Scan to Your Perfect Smile

Clear aligners must be worn for 20–22 hours per day for optimal results — removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and for oral hygiene. Wearing them less than this will delay progress. Commitment to the wear schedule is the single biggest factor in achieving your planned outcome on time.

Are Aligners as Effective as Braces?

Why Clear Aligners Are the Modern Choice

Modern clear aligner technology has advanced significantly and is now effective for a wide range of cases — from simple spacing corrections to moderate crowding and bite issues. Severely complex cases may still be better managed with fixed braces, and we will advise you honestly on the most suitable option for your specific situation.

Progress Checks

You attend every 6–8 weeks for progress reviews. We track your movement against the digital plan and hand over new aligner sets.

Retention

At treatment completion, fixed and removable retainers are fitted to keep your newly aligned teeth perfectly in place.

Mild Cases

Minor crowding, spacing, or rotation — treatment typically 6–9 months with a smaller series of trays.

Moderate Cases

Moderate crowding, mild bite issues — 10–16 months with a comprehensive series of trays and possible attachments.

Comprehensive Treatment

Complex alignment and bite correction — 16–24 months with a full series of trays, attachments, and possible auxiliaries.

Teen Aligners

Specially designed aligner packages for teenagers with eruption tabs for developing teeth and wear compliance indicators.

Your Aligner Programme Options

Attachments — small tooth-coloured composite bumps bonded to certain teeth — are often used alongside aligners to give the trays additional grip, enabling more complex tooth movements. Most patients find them barely noticeable and quickly adapt to wearing them.

Refinements

Additional aligner trays after primary treatment to fine-tune any teeth that have not quite reached their planned position.

Retainers

Fixed bonded retainer wire and custom removable clear retainers — essential for protecting your results long-term.

Express Programme

6–9 month programme for mild anterior crowding or spacing — ideal for patients with minor alignment concerns.

Full Programme

Full 12–24 month programme addressing significant alignment and bite issues with comprehensive digital planning.

Frequently asked questions

How long does clear aligner treatment take?
Treatment duration depends on the complexity of your case. Simple spacing or minor crowding may be resolved in as little as 6 months, while more complex cases can take up to 18–24 months. Your orthodontist will give you an accurate estimate after reviewing your digital scan and planning your case.
Aligners must be worn for a minimum of 20–22 hours per day. They should be removed for eating and drinking anything other than plain water, and for brushing and flossing. Consistent compliance with the wear schedule is the most important factor in achieving your results on time.
You should only drink plain still water while wearing your aligners. Hot drinks like tea and coffee can warp the plastic and stain the trays. Sugary or acidic drinks can pool inside the aligners against your teeth, significantly increasing the risk of decay. Always remove your aligners before drinking anything other than water.
Clear aligners are generally more comfortable than fixed braces. The smooth plastic does not irritate cheeks or gums. Each new tray creates a gentle pressure sensation for the first 1–3 days as teeth begin to move, but this fades quickly. Most patients find aligners far easier to adapt to than they expected.
Contact us immediately if you lose or break a tray. We will advise you to either move to the next tray in the series or go back to the previous one depending on how long you had been wearing the lost tray. Replacement trays can be ordered if needed. This is why we recommend keeping trays in their case whenever they are not in your mouth.
