What Are Dental Fillings?

Your Filling Journey

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in plaque that produce acid, gradually eroding enamel. Caught early, a small filling is all that is needed. Left untreated, decay spreads to deeper layers of the tooth, potentially requiring more complex treatment such as a root canal or crown. Regular check-ups and prompt treatment are always the most cost-effective approach.

How Do Cavities Form?

Cavity Treated, Tooth Restored — In One Visit

We use shade-matching technology to select the exact composite resin colour that blends with your surrounding enamel. The result is a filling that is completely invisible to anyone looking at your smile — unlike the dark grey of traditional amalgam.

01

X-Ray Assessment

Digital X-rays allow us to detect cavities between teeth and beneath existing restorations that are invisible to the naked eye.

02

Anaesthesia

Local anaesthetic ensures you feel nothing during decay removal. We use fine-gauge needles and apply topical numbing gel first.

Only decayed tissue is removed using a precision drill — preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Types of Fillings We Offer

Why Tooth-Coloured Fillings Are the Modern Choice

Ceramic (porcelain) inlays and onlays are a premium alternative to direct composite fillings for larger cavities in back teeth. Fabricated in a lab from a digital scan of your tooth, they provide exceptional strength and a perfect fit — ideal for patients who want the most durable and natural-looking restoration possible.

Composite Placement

Composite is placed in layers and hardened with a curing light — building up the tooth's shape precisely and securely.

Bite Check & Polish

We check your bite with articulating paper and make any fine adjustments before polishing the filling to a smooth, natural finish.

Composite Filling

Tooth-coloured resin filling bonded directly to your tooth — completed in one appointment, ideal for small to medium cavities.

Ceramic Inlay

A lab-crafted porcelain restoration that fits within the cusps of a back tooth — stronger and more lifelike than direct composite for larger fillings.

Ceramic Onlay

A porcelain restoration that covers one or more cusps of the tooth — used when decay is extensive but a full crown is not yet needed.

Glass Ionomer

A fluoride-releasing material used in high-risk patients or as a base layer under composite — especially useful in children.

Frequently asked questions

How long do composite fillings last?
Composite (tooth-coloured) fillings typically last 7–10 years with proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. Their longevity depends on the size of the filling, its location in the mouth, and how well you care for your teeth. Back teeth fillings are subject to greater chewing forces and may require replacement sooner.
No. We apply a topical numbing gel before delivering the local anaesthetic injection, so you will feel little more than a gentle pressure. Once numb, you will not feel pain during the procedure. Most patients are very pleasantly surprised by how comfortable a filling appointment can be.
With composite resin fillings, the material is hardened instantly using a curing light — so you can eat as soon as the numbness wears off. We recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods for 24 hours while the bond fully matures, but there is no lengthy waiting period.
Whether to replace amalgam fillings depends on their condition. If they are old, cracked, or failing, replacement with composite makes both clinical and aesthetic sense. If they are in good condition, routine replacement is not always necessary. We assess each filling individually at your check-up and discuss all options with you.
The most reliable way is through regular dental check-ups. However, warning signs include toothache or sensitivity to sweet, hot, or cold foods; a visible hole or dark spot on a tooth; pain when biting; or a rough edge you can feel with your tongue. Many small cavities cause no symptoms at all — which is why regular X-rays are so valuable.
