What Are Orthodontic Braces?

Your Braces Journey

Misaligned teeth affect far more than aesthetics. Crowded teeth are harder to clean, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease. Bite problems can cause jaw pain, headaches, and uneven enamel wear. Braces address these issues at their root — creating a smile that is not only beautiful but functionally superior and easier to maintain for life.

When Should You Consider Braces?

Your Orthodontic Journey — From Assessment to Perfect Alignment

Braces are not only for teenagers. Adult orthodontics is increasingly popular, with more discreet options than ever before. Many adults seek treatment to correct alignment issues they’ve lived with for years, or to address shifting that has occurred after a previous orthodontic relapse.

Brace Fitting

Brackets and wires are bonded to your teeth at your fitting appointment. The process is painless and takes 60–90 minutes.

Types of Braces We Offer

Why Straighter Teeth Are About More Than Just Looks

Ceramic braces function identically to metal braces but use tooth-coloured or clear brackets that blend with your enamel — making them far less visible. They are an excellent choice for adults or teenagers who want effective orthodontic treatment with a more discreet appearance.

Monthly Adjustments

You attend for routine adjustments every 4–8 weeks, where wires are changed to progressively move teeth toward their target positions.

Debond & Retainer

Once alignment is complete, brackets are removed and retainers are fitted immediately to hold your beautiful new smile in place.

Metal Braces

Stainless steel brackets and archwires — the most effective and cost-efficient option, ideal for complex cases.

Ceramic Braces

Clear or tooth-coloured brackets that are far less noticeable than metal — same performance, greater discretion.

Lingual Braces

Completely hidden inside the teeth — a fully invisible fixed brace system, custom-made for each patient.

Self-Ligating Braces

Brackets that use a built-in slide mechanism rather than elastic ties — generating lighter forces and often faster treatment.

Life with Braces — What to Expect

Find the Right Brace for You

Lingual braces are fitted to the inside (tongue side) of your teeth, making them completely invisible from the front. A fully bespoke system, lingual braces are custom-manufactured for each patient and deliver the same precision results as conventional braces — with zero visible hardware.

Functional Appliances

Removable appliances used in growing children to guide jaw development and correct bite discrepancies early.

Retainers

Fixed wire retainers and removable clear retainers — both available to suit your lifestyle and retention needs.

Mild to Moderate Cases

Simpler alignment corrections typically completed in 12–18 months with standard metal or ceramic braces.

Complex Cases

Significant crowding, bite correction, or jaw discrepancies requiring 18–30 months and specialist orthodontic management.

Frequently asked questions

At what age should children start orthodontic treatment?
An orthodontic assessment is recommended around age 7–8 to identify developing bite problems. Active treatment typically begins between ages 11–14 when most permanent teeth have erupted. However, braces are highly effective at any age — there is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment.
Treatment duration depends on the complexity of your case. Mild crowding may be corrected in 12 months, while complex bite corrections can take up to 30 months. Your orthodontist will give you a realistic estimate at your planning appointment, and we track progress at every adjustment visit.
Braces do not hurt during fitting. After each adjustment appointment, your teeth may feel tender for 2–4 days as they respond to the new forces. This is completely normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. The discomfort decreases significantly as treatment progresses and you adapt.
You should avoid very hard, sticky, or crunchy foods that could damage brackets or get stuck in the wires — such as toffees, whole apples, hard crusts, and popcorn. Most normal foods are fine when cut into smaller pieces. We provide a comprehensive food guide at your fitting appointment.
Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their original positions. Without a retainer, relapse can begin within weeks of brace removal. We strongly recommend wearing your retainer as instructed — full-time initially, then nights only long-term. Many patients choose to wear retainers indefinitely to protect their results permanently.
